The Logo Doesn't Close Deals
The big brokerage firms spend millions on their brand. The billboards, the sponsorships, the glossy reports, the name on the side of the building. And I'll give them this: it's a great-looking logo.
But after 25+-plus years in this business, here's what I know. That logo has never closed a deal. Not once.
Think about your last big win. When the client called, did they ask for the firm? Or did they ask for you? Nine times out of ten, they asked for you. Because the brand that actually matters to a client isn't the one on the building. It's yours.
What a Firm's Brand Really Buys You
Let's be fair. A big brand name can get you in the door. It gives a nervous client a little comfort before the first meeting.
But that's where it stops. Once you're in the room, the brand steps aside and you take over. The client is judging whether you know the market, whether you return calls, and whether they can trust you. None of that comes from the logo.
Want proof? Watch what happens when a top broker leaves a big-name firm. The firm keeps the brand. The broker keeps the clients. Every time. That tells you exactly which brand the client was loyal to.
But the Big Clients Want the Big Name
This is where the brand argument used to have teeth. The national retailer, the tenant expanding into ten markets, the fund with properties all over the country. For them, hiring the big-name firm felt like the safe choice. Nobody gets fired for picking the famous logo.
I know because I lost that fight. Years back, we lost clients like Lorna Jane and F45 Fitness to the national firms. They liked our work. But the big brand promised coverage in every market they were heading into, and we couldn't match that.
That hurt. And back then, the brand really was selling something real: reach. But today, that's not something only the big names can offer.
The Brand Gap Has Closed
Right now I'm working with several clients who, a few years ago, would only have trusted a big-name firm. Today they're working with us. Here's why the logo doesn't carry the weight it used to.
First, the tools caught up. The research, the data, the site-selection software, the polished presentations. All of that used to sit behind the big brands. Now any serious brokerage has it. Clients can see the quality of the work, not just the name on it.
Second, the reach caught up. That's why I started the CRE Affiliate Network. It's a group of independent brokerages, one in each market, that send business to each other. When a client needs a location in a city we don't cover, I simply call a partner I trust, who knows that market as well as I know L.A. There are many great networks out there for you as an agent or as an independent brokerage to join.
So the client gets everything the big brand promised: national coverage and top-tier work. Plus something the big brand can't promise. One person they trust, running the whole thing.
Build Your Brand, Not Theirs
If you're at a big-name firm right now, ask yourself an honest question. Every deal you close, every relationship you build, whose brand gets stronger? If it's the firm's and not yours, you're working hard to build someone else's name.
And if you're at an independent shop, quit thinking the big logo gives them an edge you can't beat. It doesn't anymore. Put your name out there. Show up in your market. Share what you know. Let clients see your track record. Your personal brand is the one that follows you for your whole career.
The right brokerage should make your brand bigger, not swallow it.
Bet on Yourself
Logos come and go. Firms merge, rebrand, and change names. But your name, your reputation, and your relationships stay with you. That's the brand that wins deals.
